KENORA – Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding), issued the following statement regarding the impact of the imposition of countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber products exported to the United States:
“In the Kenora riding, as in Northern Ontario and throughout Canada, we recognize the vital importance of the softwood lumber industry which provides thousands of jobs and is a main driver of our economy. I join the Government of Canada in strongly disagreeing with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s decision to impose such duties and fully recognize the severity of the impact that will be experienced on both sides of the border.
“In light of the U.S. decision, the Government of Canada is taking immediate action to support the forestry industry at all levels; from companies, to workers, and affected communities. I’m also pleased that Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of Natural Resources, is re-convening the Federal-Provincial Task Force on Softwood Lumber to further examine additional measures.
“The goal is to find solution, even if we must pursue it through litigation. I will continue to work with all levels of government to defend and protect the softwood lumber industry in our riding.”
