Winter Storm Update – Ignace – Nov 19/16 02:00EST

IGNACE – WEATHER = Ignace has become a stop point for many travellers. The closure of the Trans-Canada Highway has stranded travellers in the community. Hotels are full.

At 01:30 the Ontario Provincial Police tweeted: UPDATE:ROAD CLOSURE: remains CLOSED in both directions between to Hwy 599 due to poor weather conditions.

There are reports that many vehicles are waiting out the storm, or are stranded on the highway near Upsala.

Winter storm warning in effect for:

  • Atikokan – Shebandowan – Quetico Park
  • Upsala – Raith

Environment Canada says that hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A total of 20 to 40 cm of snow and blowing snow are expected.

Snow continues tonight with some areas already receiving in excess of 30 cm as of 1 AM EST. Most regions will receive total accumulations of 20 to 40 cm of snow by Saturday morning with the highest amounts expected west of Thunder Bay.

In addition, strong and gusty northerly winds will generate blowing snow reducing visibilities.

Hazardous winter driving conditions are expected to continue before gradually starting to improve towards Saturday morning.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.
