KENORA – Grand Council Treaty #3 is celebrating the anniversary of Treaty #3 agreed to in 1873.

“Today, we encourage all of the citizens of the Anishinaabe Nation to commemorate and celebrate the anniversary of Treaty” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “For centuries, the Anishinaabe Nation has governed and exercised sovereignty over the territory identified within the boundaries of Treaty #3. It is with great pride that our Nation continues those traditions.”

Treaty leadership negotiated with the Crown that Anishinaabe citizens would continue to be allowed to exercise their Rights within the entire territory and that the lands and resources would be shared collectively under Treaty – and not the Indian Act.

Grand Council Treaty #3 (GCT3) is the Traditional government of the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3.
