MOOSE FACTORY – Mushkegowuk Council Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon and Deputy Grand Chief Rebeca Friday welcome the news of funding to improve the aging and well-travelled train cars that have transported northern residents of the James Bay and Mushkegowuk region to points south and back home. The 16 refurbished cars are anticipated to provide a more sanitary, comfortable and tolerable journey so that families, and especially elders can endure the long five to six hour ride through the Omushkego terrain in comfort.
There will no longer be the need to stop in Fraserdale, to wait for an electrician to conduct repairs while on its journey between Moosonee and Cochrane. This funding to improve the train cars has been anticipated by the residents for the last few years.
Families and elders will now have a more comfortable journey to the southern town of Cochrane, Timmins and points south to visit family and friends or attend to medical needs.
The news to improve this vital transportation moves one step closer to having basic public services available to residents of the north, more comparable to Southern Ontario. These services have been lacking for many years, having an impact on our basic human rights.
