KENORA – Environment Canada has upgraded the weather advisory for the Kenora – Fort Frances -Rainy River areas to a severe Thunderstorm Watch.
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:
- Kenora – Grassy Narrows – Whitedog
- Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls – Morson
- Fort Frances – Emo – Rainy River
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.
Clusters of thunderstorms approaching from Northwestern Minnesota and Southern Manitoba have the potential to become severe as they move across the border into Northwestern Ontario. Intense lightning, torrential downpours are likely with some of the thunderstorms. 2 cm hail and wind gusts to 90 km/h are also possible.
Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.
