THUNDER BAY – The wildfire hazard across the region is expected to climb this week.

There was one new fire confirmed in the Northwest Region by the afternoon of June 22. Thunder Bay Fire Number 23 is not under control at 0.2 hectares and is located near Trewartha Lake.

The forest fire hazard is moderate throughout most of the region with an area of high hazard in the Red Lake District. The forest fire hazard is forecast to rise through the week in the Northwest Region as warmer temperatures and clear weather continues.

Other active fires in the region include:

  • Nipigon District Fire 21, located 31 kilometres northwest of Nakina is under control at 7.0 hectares in size.
  • Red Lake District Fire 003, in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, is being observed at a size of 74,334 hectares.
