THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay might have some new hockey heroes as 20 kids looking to become the newest members of #TEAMSTAAL2016 at this year’s Pandora Intercity Summer Classic, have raised more than $21,000 to date for the Northern Cancer Fund.

Originally looking to raise $300 per contestant, the fundraising effort has nearly tripled its goal and still has four days left to go. “The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is overwhelmed by the community support that continues to roll in. These kids mean business and are all vowing to get the attention of the Staal brothers and get drafted to play on their team. It’s incredible to see how dedicated these kids are and we can’t wait to announce who will play during the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic,” stated Staal Foundation Open, Executive Director, Scott Smith.

“It makes me proud to see these kids stepping up and working hard to participate in the game. They are demonstrating leadership and the qualities of what makes a great hockey player. These kids are determined and focused, concentrating on the task at hand and rallying the community to support them as they compete. They are helping to make a positive difference in other children’s lives, which is truly amazing”, commented Eric Staal of the New York Rangers.

The top three fundraisers will automatically win spots to play on #TEAMSTAAL2016 on July 11th, at the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic, the most epic road hockey game the city will ever see. Two additional spots will be randomly drawn from the remaining 17 players, with each $20 they raise resulting in another ballot in the drum. The more money they raise, the more chances they have to win. Every dollar raised will support the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.
