THUNDER BAY – BUSINESS – Thunder Bay International Airports Authority (TBIAA) is experiencing a surge in US residents using Thunder Bay as their aviation gateway.

“Thunder Bay Airport offers both time and costs savings for our US neighbours,” according to the Airport Authority’s President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Schmidtke. “Through Toronto’s Pearson Airport Air Canada offers an extensive network of direct, non-stop flights to European destinations. Add WestJet’s three United Kingdom stops and travelers have multiple European options with short travel times and great prices.”

With as little as two weeks advance booking, major European destinations such as Rome, Paris and London are available for under $800 US and a total travel time of under 12 hours.

Schmidtke reported that observed US travelers reached unprecedented levels for the month of May in 2016. “May is not yet the high season for summertime European vacations. We are hoping that more of our US neighbours will see the value in vacationing in Europe using Thunder Bay as the gateway.”
