THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Thunder Bay peewee Kings got goals from four different skaters to help them defeat the Western Zone’s NWO Stars 4-1 in the title game of the Hockey Northwestern Ontario AAA district championship Sunday at Fort William First Nation Arena.
With the victory, Thunder Bay now moves to represent the branch at the all-Ontario peewee championship April 4-8 in Sudbury.
In Sunday’s contest, Thunder Bay carried the play throughout the opening period outshooting the Stars by a large margin, but saw the team’s head to middle stanza tied 1-1.
The Western Zone reps took advantage on one of their few chances to open the scoring with 4:39 left in the frame on an Andrew Kehl effort.
The Kings’ persistent pressure allowed them to equalize a minute and a half later courtesy of Matthew Valiquette.
Thunder Bay carried the play again in the middle stanza and were rewarded with the eventual game-winner from Tyler Lewis at 4:02.
The Kings added some insurance markers in the third to secure the victory as Jack Pineau and Jack Cook both found the back of the net to round out the scoring.
Lewis also had two assists in the match-up to finish off a three-point game for Thunder Bay.
Gage Stewart recorded the win for the Kings while Aidan Butts was stellar in defeat for the Stars.
