THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Today, Executives from the Staal Foundation Open and Janzen’s Pharmacy announced LIVE BETTER by Janzen’s Interactive Zone, a new feature for the 2016 tournament that will encourage the community to live better.

LIVE BETTER by Janzen’s Interactive Zone will improve the way spectators interact with and experience the 2016 tournament. The emphasis will be on physical and fun activities where spectators of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to play, move, create and interact!

“The Staal Foundation Open recognizes the connection between active people and a healthy community. This year, one of our focuses is to include activities that get people moving and promote active living. Golf is often thought of as a passive sport. In reality, it requires a high degree of fitness, coordination and interaction. It is a great activity to improve physical and mental health regardless of age,” says Staal Foundation Open Executive Director, Scott Smith.

The announcement was made at Janzen’s new Current River location where a group of neighbours visited the pharmacy to showcase some of the activities of the LIVE BETTER by Janzen’s Interactive Zone and to sign up as volunteers for the 2016 tournament.

”We are very excited to present the Live Better by Janzen’s Interactive Zone at this year’s Staal Foundation Open. At Janzen’s we recognize the importance of promoting physical activities as we continue to help our community Live Better Every Day. We look forward to offering various activities to attendees of all ages throughout tournament week,” said Janzen’s Pharmacy owner Brenda Adams.

Today, the Staal Foundation Open was also thrilled to announce that Janzen’s is returning as the
2016 Volunteer Sponsor. Last year alone, volunteers contributed 14,000 hours of time to the tournament. The Staal Foundation Open declared March as VOLUNTEER MONTH. Online registration officially opens on March 1st.

Volunteer Coordinator, Gloria Sherban, explained that the biggest demand for volunteers is for Score Keepers, Marshalls and Spotters. “Volunteers are the backbone of this tournament. This year we are looking for 500 volunteers to help us make the Staal Foundation Open a success. Golf is not a prerequisite.”

Other volunteer opportunities include hospitality, guest relations, and the opportunity to caddy. To
register please visit: staalopen.ca. The 2016 Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is being hosted at Whitewater Golf Course from July 11th to July 17th.
