ROCKVILLE, Md. – Stefanie Hayward scored all three goals for the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens Monday morning as they wrapped up competition at the Junior Women’s Hockey League Challenge Cup in Rockville, Md., with a 3-2 victory over Detroit Belle Tire.
Hayward started her impressive performance notching the game’s opening marker 1:47 into the contest as she finished off a feed from Emilie Varrin.
Thunder Bay made it 2-0 in the latter stages of the frame as Avery Baker assisted on Hayward’s second tally of the session.
Detroit pulled to within one with a power play goal in the final minute of the second period.
Belle Tire then tied things up while up another skater six and a half minutes into the third.
Hayward however finished off her hat trick by supplying the game-winner with an even strength effort with 6:21 remaining to give the Queens the decision as they avenged an earlier 3-0 setback to the same Detroit side in round robin play.
Hannah Armstrong and Brianna Prete had helpers on that one.
Aden Johnson faced 25 shots in goal for Thunder Bay in earning the victory.
The Queens finished the 12-team tourney with a 3-2 record.
