Bombardier Designed Deutsche Bahn ICE Awarded
BERLIN – BUSINESS – An international jury of experts honoured the Deutsche Bahn ICE 4 high-speed train’s exterior design with a Special Mention at the German Design Awards 2016. The award, given in the Transportation category, honours the dedication of companies and designers by recognising work whose design exhibits particularly successful aspects or solutions.
In close coordination and constructive collaboration with the designers of Deutsche Bahn and Siemens, the Bombardier design team developed the ICE 4’s award-winning exterior design – which is now being recognised for a second time.
Michael Sohn, Head of Industrial Design at Bombardier Transportation, said, “The Red Dot Design Award 2015 and the recent recognition at the German Design Awards 2016 are a striking verifications that the design of the ICE 4 excels through its creative quality. In addition to significantly improved aerodynamics, functionality and aesthetics have also been successfully integrated into the new ICE 4.”
The German Design Award is the German Design Council’s top international prize that identifies and honours unique design trends. Each year, awards go to top-class submissions from product and communications design that, in their own way, pioneer the international design landscape. Started in 2012, the German Design Award is among the most respected design competitions in the world and is regarded with high esteem well beyond specialist groups.
Background: ICE 4 is the name of the new Deutsche Bahn high-speed train. Siemens is the main contractor for the ICE 4 trains; Bombardier’s supplier share is about 30 per cent. Along with the development of the exterior design, Bombardier is responsible for the shell construction of the steel car bodies, the delivery of the trailer bogies and the final assembly of a third of the entire ICE 4 fleet.
