OTTAWA, ON – Kenora MP Bob Nault says that he is looking forward to getting to work in his new role as chair of the Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee.
Bob Nault was elected chair by committee members last week as they exercised their new right to select their own leadership. The election fulfills the Liberals promise to create more independent committees.
“I am looking forward to working with the committee to strengthen our foreign policy as well as our relations with other countries and regions. This committee serves an important role, and I’m honoured to be leading the group,” said Nault.
The committee oversees Global Affairs Canada. It also studies and reports on many independent agencies including the International Joint Commission. The IJC protects and preserves waterways that share both a Canadian and American border, such as Lake of the Woods.
“The work we’re doing on this committee directly affects northerners. Not just through our work in protecting our incredible lake in Kenora, but by improving relations with other countries such as the United States. It’s a big role and I am excited to get to work,” said Nault. “During the speech from the throne, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned a few of the priorities including, reinforcing the Canada-US relationship, supporting Canadian industries abroad and increasing Canada’s economic and political engagement in Asia”.
