THUNDER BAY – Do you use iTunes? Likely along with millions of people across Canada, your music and often your movies are on your Apple iTunes account.
The Ontario Provincial Police are reporting that in parts of Ontario there is a new scam targeting your iTunes account is happening.
The OPP report that they have started receiving complaints where an individual is receiving what appears to be a legitimate email from iTunes. These phishing emails are telling people that there was a charge of $50 put on their account that should not have happened.
To remedy the situation, people receiving these scam emails are told that they can apply for a refund.
OPP say that the link provided requires that you share your personal information including credit card numbers.
This is a phishing scam that is designed to get you to give your credit card information out to the scammers.
The OPP are sharing some tips on how to spot and avoid phishing scams
- Protect your computer with anti-virus software, spyware filters, email filters and firewall programs.
- Contact the financial institution immediately and report your suspicions.
- Do not reply to any email that requests your personal information.
- Look for misspelled words.
- Always report phishing or ‘spoofed’ emails.
