Importance of Smoke Alarm in Residential Homes

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reports, that at approximately 5:40AM EST this morning Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue were called to a report of a structural fire at 517 Strand Ave.

The first arriving crews found significant smoke and flame issuing from the rear of the single storey home. The occupants escaped after being alerted by smoke alarms.

One occupant was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The extent of her injuries is unknown at this time.

The fire was brought under control quickly.

A suppression crew along with Fire Investigators presently remain on scene doing preliminary work to try and determine a cause. It is not considered suspicious.

The occupants have arranged alternate accommodations as fire and smoke damage is extensive to the home.

The importance of a working smoke alarm likely helped to save lives.
