THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves men’s basketball team was able to hold onto a late lead, squeaking out a 72-71 win over the York Lions on Saturday afternoon at the RBC Classic, hosted by Brock University.
Lakehead saw a scoring outburst from rookie Kache Kopec (photo left), who dropped five 3’s in nine attempts from beyond the arc. He also grabbed 4 rebounds before fouling out.
Bacarius Dinkins had a bounce back game, scoring a 21-point, 14-rebound double-double (9-of-12 from the floor), while fellow post Mike Theodore put together another solid performance, scoring 9 points with 9 rebounds (6 offensive) with 2 blocked shots in 16 minutes off the bench.
The Thunderwolves found themselves up 10 in the fourth quarter, only to let the Lions back into the game with turnovers. As the final buzzer approached, Lakehead was able to get a stop on the final possession to deny York the comeback.
Raheem Isaac was York’s top scorer with 22 points and 9 rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting.
“Our guys competed for 40 minutes and gave us a chance down the stretch,” said coach Manny Furtado. “We defended really hard and am really happy with how our guys responded after yesterday’s loss.”
Lakehead will finish its weekend campaign tomorrow morning at 10:00am against the Waterloo Warriors. No webcast is scheduled.
