Nishnawbe-Aski Police Officer Injured in Attawapiskat

Crime UpdateATTAWAPISKAT – On Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at approximately 1:45PM EDT,  members of the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, Attawapiskat Detachment responded to three calls for service with regard to a disturbance and property damage involving one suspect known to police.

The investigation led police to the suspect’s location within a residence where police officers observed fire at the front door. As police officers doused the flames, an explosion was heard from within the residence causing a burn injury to one of the officers. At that time the suspect immediately exited the residence aflame. The officers assisted the suspect to extinguish the flames. The police officer was treated for first degree burn injuries and the suspect was treated for third degree burn injuries.

The suspect and the officer are both expected to recover.

A thirty-seven-year-old male from Attawapiskat has been charged with two counts of Mischief under $5,000, Adult Common Nuisance – Endanger Life, and Uttering Threats Causing Bodily Harm. The male is currently in custody pending a bail hearing.
