Border Cats Home Opener on May 26th
THUNDER BAY – BASEBALL – The Thunder Bay Border Cats are proud to announce the signing of outfielder Jared James from California’s Long Beach State University. The 6’1″, 190 junior is the son of former major league outfielder Dion James, who played 11 years in the big leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees. Jared was selected in the 30th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by Atlanta out of Sacramento Community College. The native of Sacramento batted .351 as a sophomore in 2014 with three home runs, 10 doubles and five triples.
Thunder Bay manager Danny Benedetti has also added eight pitchers to the Border Cats staff. Signing with the Cats are Kenny Glover Junior (Savannah State University), Malik Jones (Savannah State University), Greg Weissert (Fordham University), Jeremy Charles (University of Hartford), Sean McKay (University of Hartford), Nate Steger (Winston Salem State University), Donnie Stellers (Wake Forest University), and Julian Loret de Mola (Florida-Nova Southeastern University).
The Border Cats open the 2015 Northwoods League season on Tuesday, May 26th, versus the Eau Claire Express at 7:05pm at Tbaytel Park. Single game tickets, season tickets and flex-packs are now on sale at the stadium ticket office or by calling (807) 766-CATS.
The Border Cats are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. Playing its 22nd season of summer collegiate baseball in 2015, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in the world with 18 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, more than 120 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (WAS) and MLB All-Stars Chris Sale (CWS), Jordan Zimmermann (WAS), Curtis Granderson (NYM), Lucas Duda (NYM) and Ben Zobrist (OAK).
