THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Travel across Northwestern Ontario will likely be impacted by weather over the next twenty-four hours. Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for a number of districts in the region.
Freezing rain warning in effect for:
- Upsala – Raith
- Dryden
- Vermillion Bay
- Ignace
- Kenora – Grassy Narrows – Whitedog
- Nipigon
- Marathon
- Greenstone
Ice build-up due to freezing rain is expected or occurring.
A low pressure system will bring snow, ice pellets and freezing rain to the regions beginning tonight. General snow amounts of 2 to 5 cm are expected before the change to ice pellets and freezing rain, although some regions may see higher snow amounts. A prolonged period of freezing rain is expected and will continue Friday for most regions. Freezing rain should end Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
