THUNDER BAY – An early morning fire in Westfort Hotel caused the evacuation of the Westfort Tavern. The fire damaged the kitchen area at the Westfort Tavern.
Fire Rescue crews were dispatched this morning about 7:30AM to the hotel. They arrived to find heavy smoke in the kitchen. Residents in the building were evacuated and firefighters found ‘Zero Readings’ for carbon monoxide and used fans to get the smoke out.
Tonight, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue report, “A fire investigation has determined the cause of a fire which damaged a kitchen area in the Westfort Tavern today to be caused by the failure of an electrical power bar”.
No injuries were sustained during the fire. Building occupants are reminded to leave the building immediately when a fire alarm sounds and follow the direction in the approved Fire Safety Plan.
While it has not been confirmed in this case, it is not unusual to find these types of devices with counterfeit CSA certification.
“Homeowners and businesses are reminded to never overload electrical outlets and to always use good quality CSA-approved power bars,” said Fire Chief John Hay.
