TORONTO – SPORTS – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves were led by Jylisa Williams to win over Toronto.

Jylisa Williams raised the bar once more, this time at the OUA level, snapping the OUA’s single game scoring record with a 50-point effort that pushed Lakehead past the Toronto Varsity Blues, 86-69.
The remarkable effort by Williams eclipses the nearly 35-year old record of 49 points set by Candi Lohr in the ’82-’83 season.
Williams was on a torrid pace from the opening jump ball, scoring 26 points in the first half. Her incredible scoring feats continued for the duration of the game, as she was essentially unstoppable, going 18-for-28 from the field, and hitting 14 of 17 free throws. Williams would also grab 8 rebounds with 5 assists and 5 steals in 34 minutes of play.
Her partner in the back court, Corina Bruni had a solid game, scoring 10 points (including two 3’s) with 7 assists and 2 steals. Essa Jacobsen hauled in 10 rebounds and had 3 steals of her own.
Lakehead was in front, 39-34 at halftime, and would eventually clamp down on defense in the final quarter, limiting Toronto to 14 points and sealing the win.
For the Blues, Jill Stratton scored 21 points with 9 rebounds.
Coach Jon Kreiner said, “I can’t start without saying what an amazing performance by Jylisa Williams. She just keeps getting better at the right time of the year. Bruni is also really picking her game up, with back to back terrific performances. Toronto was very tough today. Every time we made a run they made one of their own. Stratton is a tough match up and Toronto’s dribble attack caused us to foul too much but we locked down in the fourth quarter and pulled out a great win against a quality opponent.”
The women’s team takes on the CIS #7 Ryerson Rams tomorrow evening at 6pm.
