THUNDER BAY – Makenna Burke picked up the shutout to help backstop the Thunder Bay RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens to a 3-0 victory over Osseo-Maple Grove of suburban Minneapolis Friday evening in their opener at the St. Luke’s Icebreaker Invitational in Duluth.
Thunder Bay scored all three of their goals in the opening period on markers by Vanessa Nicholl, Karadyn Kiviaho and Brooke Herman.
Herman also picked up an assist in the contest as did Dayna Doucet and Ellen Svane.
Burke turned aside all 15 shots she faced to register the shutout.
Two more round robin tilts are on tap for the bantam AA’s as they meet Edina Green at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the Faribault Falcons at 12:30 p.m. later in the day.
The results weren’t as positive Friday for the two other Queens teams competing in tournaments.
Also competing in Duluth the Tim Hortons peewees fell 7-1 to the Wayzata Trojans.
Meanwhile at the Shaftesbury Titans Prep Winter Classic in Winnipeg, the Sportop midget AA Queens were blanked in their first two contests falling 4-0 to the Yellowhead Chiefs in game 1 before being humbled 12-0 by a strong Pursuit of Excellence Black squad from Kelowna, B.C. in game 2.
The midgets wrap-up round robin play Saturday at 10:45 a.m. vs. the Minnesota Revolution under-16 squad.
As for the peewees, they take on the White Bear Lake Bears Saturday at 10:45 a.m. before squaring off against the Fargo Freeze in a 3:15 p.m. start.
