Lakehead ThunderwolvesOTTAWA – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s basketball team got out to a good start on Friday, but couldn’t contain the Ottawa Gee-Gees for 40 minutes, coming out on the wrong end of an 89-76 decision.

The ‘Wolves began well, shooting 58% from the field to lead 19-18 after the first quarter of play.
The Gee-Gees did seem a little sloppy on offense to begin the game, but would tighten things up as the first half unfolded, and Ottawa heated up from long range to take a 41-35 lead into the locker room.
Despite shooting a good percentage on the game (54% FG), Lakehead had a hard time dealing with the OUA’s top scorer, Johhny Berhanemeskel, who scored a game-high 26 points.
Lakehead also had issues with Caleb Agada and Gabriel Gonthier Dubue, who combined for 38 points and 18 rebounds. Dubue alone grabbed 3 offensive rebounds on a single possession for Ottawa midway through the fourth quarter, which took any wind that was left out of Lakehead’s sails.
Jamar Coke had an efficient shooting night, going 8-of-10 from the field, including 5 three-pointers for a team-high 21 points. Dwayne Harvey hit on both of his three point attempts to finish with 14 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.
While Lakehead committed 15 turnovers, their defense forced only 7 from the Gee-Gees. That being said, the ‘Wolves did translate those 7 turnovers into 15 points at the other end of the court.
Manny Furtado said, “We have to learn from every game and tonight is one game we can definitely learn from. We had our chances against the #1 in the country but let a couple possessions get away from us. It’s now time to focus on the defending CIS champs in Carleton tomorrow.”
The men’s team will take on the Carleton Ravens tomorrow at 8pm.
Webcast coverage will be available via OUA TV.
