THUNDER BAY – Updated- A train derailment has Highway 17 closed at Nipigon.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team of investigators to a derailment involving a Canadian Pacific freight train derailment approximately 140 kilometres east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence.
21:00 EST – UPDATE: ROAD CLOSURE: #Hwy17 both directions from #Nipigon to Schreiber – Hwy remains CLOSED for up to 48HRS as workers continue cleanup.
16:00 EST – UPDATE: ROAD CLOSURE: #Hwy17 both directions from #Nipigon to SCHREIBER – Highway to remain CLOSED for AT LEAST 24hrs for cleanup.
15:15 EST – #OPP dealing with train derailment east of Nipigon. Seven propane cylinder cars are leaking and Hazmat Teams ENR. Road closed. Avoid area.
The OPP have tweeted: “ROAD CLOSURE: #Hwy17 both directions from #Nipigon to Gravel River – Highway CLOSED due to train derailment, please avoid the area.”
Calls to the NNL Newsroom from drivers strained on the highway report that the closure is likely due to a chemical spill and that they are being told there will be a significant wait.
