THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Skiers from across the country, including NDC Thunder Bay, have gathered at Highlands Nordic in Duntroon, Ontario for the for the selection races to represent Canada at the World Junior and U23 World Championships.
Today’s event was a “skiathalon” event in which the skiers race the first half of the race as a classic race and at the halfway point they enter a transition zone and switch their equipment to finish the second half skate skiing.
NDC Thunder Bay skier Scott Hill has put himself in a favourable position to qualify for the Canadian Team by winning the U23 race and finishing as the second fastest man of the day in the 30 km event.
David Askwith also produced strong results today finishing 4th in the Junior Men’s 20 km race. Teammate, Evan Palmer-Charette of Thunder Bay, finished 5th in the U23 category putting himself in a good position to also qualify to race for Canada. Former NDC Thunder Bay athlete Michael Somppi finished 3rd overall in the Senior Men’s race. Alannah McLean finished 14th in the Senior Womens race which was 15km.
The racing continues Saturday and Sunday to select to contingent to race in Kazakhstan later in the month.
