THUNDER BAY – Weather is likely to be the story for residents and travellers along the North Shore of Lake Superior today.
Special weather statement in effect for:
- Marathon – Schreiber
- Nipigon – Rossport
Potential for significant snowfall across northern regions and heavy rainfall near Lake Superior today.
An approaching low pressure system will affect much of Northern Ontario today. For areas well north of Lake Superior, rain is expected to begin this morning. Rain is then forecast to change to snow this afternoon as colder air moves in and continue through the night. There is considerable uncertainty as to how much snow will accumulate with this system as temperatures will be near the freezing mark. However, current indications suggest that some areas may receive as much as 15 centimetres of snow by Wednesday morning.
Areas from Nipigon to Marathon and northeast into Hornepayne are expected to continue as rain. Rainfall amounts in the 20 to 40 millimetre range can be expected with the low pressure system. The rain will change to snow overnight with a few centimetres possible.
Geraldton is expected to go through a transition from rain to snow. 15 to 25 millimetres of rain is expected before changing to snow this evening and then near 5 centimetres of snow is expected by Wednesday morning.
