THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Heading into the Labour Day weekend, it looks like a wet Friday and a wet Monday. Further to the east, today, Sault Ste Marie is expecting heavy rain today.

For Saturday, expect mainly cloudy conditions with a thirty percent chance of showers early in the morning. Clearing conditions are expected late in the evening with a forecast high of 21c.

Border Crossing Updates:

Thousands of tourists cross the International Border from Canada into the United States, and back again. Over the Labour Day long weekend, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is suggesting to travellers to plan their border crossing to avoid delays during the upcoming Labour Day weekend.

Peak traffic volumes entering Canada are anticipated to be between 4:00PM EDT and 7:00PM EDT on Sunday, September 1, and between 11:00AM EDT and 7:00PM EDT on Monday, September 2, when border wait times may exceed 30 minutes.

Higher than normal traffic could also be expected on Friday evening, August 30, and on Saturday morning, August 31.

Peak traffic volume information and anticipated border wait times are based on historical data. The CBSA anticipates an increase in traffic this weekend from previous years based on traffic volume trends to date in 2011. The forecast traffic volumes may vary from one port of entry to another depending on numerous factors, including weather conditions.

For more information on border wait times and for instructions on how to receive Twitter messages for border wait times at some ports of entry, visit the CBSA Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca. You can also visit the Government of Canada Wireless Portal through your Web-enabled mobile device at www.wap.gc.ca or www.gc.ca.

What to Do This Weekend

On Sunday, the 31st of August, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Memorial Baton Relay will pass through Thunder Bay. This event gives the Regiment an opportunity to interact with all Canadians and to pay tribute to the men and women of Northwestern Ontario who have served with the Regiment, and specifically the two soldiers who were killed in action in Afghanistan while serving with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

We live in a world of troubles. The news is filled daily with stories of conflict and strife. The freedoms and priviledge that we enjoy in our daily lives comes at a great price.

If you would like to come out to thank and cheer on the ones who do “pay it forward’ for us all, you will find the runners departing the intersection of Red River Road and Algonquin St at 0800 hrs (8:00AM EDT) on Sunday.

They will be running down Red River Road to Waverly Park Afghanistan Memorial.
