Thunder Storm Warning

Thunder Storm WarningTHUNDER BAY – WEATHER – The hot summer weather is giving rise to the potential for thunderstorm. Environment Canada has Thunderstorm watches in effect:

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

  • Pikangikum – Poplar Hill – MacDowell
  • Sandy Lake – Weagamow Lake – Deer Lake
  • Sachigo Lake – Bearskin Lake

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and torential rain.

A combination of a warm front moving across the regions this evening, followed by a cold front approaching from Northern Manitoba later tonight has set the stage for thunderstorms, possibly severe. The main threat appears to be torrential downpours which may produce local rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm in an hour or less. Damaging winds are also a threat. Some of the thunderstorms may also contain frequent lightning and hail.

Rapidly rising rivers and creeks can sweep away bridges, culverts, buildings, and people. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn’t a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm. In Canada, lightning kills up to 10 people every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.
