No Injuries in Plane Crash

THUNDER BAY – On Thursday, July 17, 2014 at approximately 11:54AM EDT, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Provincial Communications Centre (PCC) received a call advising of a plane that crashed in the bush somewhere between Atikokan and Ignace, (approximately 50 kilometres south east of Ignace, between Sand Lake and Seseganaga Lake).

The pilot of the plane contacted the PCC by satellite phone and advised his plane had encountered engine failure and the two occupants of the plane were not injured.

The OPP Helicopter Unit that was being utilized to conduct a search on the Kaministiquia River was re-directed to attend the scene of the crash with an Emergency Response Team officer.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) and the Transport Canada Safety Board (TCSB) have been advised and will commence an investigation into the cause of the crash.

It is unknown at this time the type of plane that was involved in the crash. Further details will be provided as information becomes available.

The investigation is continuing.
