THUNDER BAY – Details on the mining accident that claimed the life of a thirty-eight year old man … the Lac des Iles Mine was shut down on Thursday afternoon until 7PM with workers under lock-down.

The thirty-eight-year-old man was reportedly moving rocks with a load-haul machine. He was working about half a mile deep in the mine. He was pinned under a large rock when the rock gave way.
Mine rescue came to his assistance, however the man’s injuries were too severe. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s name is being released pending the notification of next of kin. Sources tell NetNewsledger the man was not from Thunder Bay.
In a statement issued by North American Palladium: “We would like to extend our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased at this time and are offering grief counselling support to our employees”.
Police and Ontario government officials are investigating the incident.
