THUNDER BAY – The Walking overpass at Thunder Bay’s new Marina Park is closed. A weld on a section of one of the framed glass panels on the Water Street pedestrian overpass was found detached during a routine scheduled cleaning today.
As a precautionary measure, the City has temporarily closed Water Street from Red River Road to Van Norman Street along with the overpass until repairs can be made. A structural consultant is working with the City’s Engineering Division to undertake repairs and complete an inspection of the Overpass.
“We’ve already had specialists inspect the structure and we’ve identified a plan to repair the weld where the panel became detached,” said Pat Mauro, Manager – Engineering Division. “The closure is simply a precautionary measure for the safety of pedestrians and area traffic. The Overpass and Water Street will be reopened as soon as repairs are complete and it has been re-inspected and deemed safe.”
Should the repairs not be complete by Monday, a contingency plan for a detour is in place for the Firefighters 10 Mile Road Race.
