Wrestling Program in New Direction

THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Lakehead Athletics have formally announced the end of their working relationship with coach Brock Curtis of the Lakehead wrestling program. Curtis has occupied the head coach position for the past 5 seasons.

“Lakehead Thunderwolves wrestling program is moving in a different direction,” said Athletic Director Tom Warden. “I’d like to thank Brock Curtis and his coaching staff for their years of service to Lakehead University.”

During Curtis’ tenure, Lakehead hosted the OUA championship tournament once (2011) and the CIS tournament on two occasions (2011, 2012). The latter CIS tournament featured two CIS gold medals for the Thunderwolves.

Curtis comments, “I wish the best for the program, the athletes and the future coach at Lakehead.”

The wrestling team’s best showing during Curtis’ tenure was in 2010, when the men’s program won the OUA conference championship and finished 4th at nationals. Curtis was also named 2010’s OUA Coach of the Year for men’s wrestling.

As for the women’s program, their best campaign with Curtis came in 2011, when the Thunderwolves finished 3rd in the OUA and 4th at the CIS meet.

This season the women’s team placed 4th at OUA’s and 7th at the CIS tournament, claiming 1 CIS silver and 1 CIS bronze. The men’s team placed 5th at OUA’s and 12th at CIS.
