THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI) hosted its Annual Recreation & Athletics Awards Banquet on April 8, 2014. The banquet recognized the accomplishments of local and regional athletes, coaches and recreation participants.
Thunderhawks Women’s Indoor Soccer team Co-Captain, Breanne Fron was crowned this year’s Female Athlete of the Year. Fron, a Thunder Bay native, is graduating from the Power Engineering program. She is also the Women’s Indoor Soccer team MVP, a recipient of the OCAA All Academic Award and the top scorer in the Thunder Bay Women’s Soccer (TBWS) League. Her commitment to the team and the sport is a testament of her true athletic spirit and dedication.
Rookie Cross Country Runner, Gavin Shields was presented with this year’s Male Athlete of the Year Award. Shields, a Thunder Bay native is finishing up his first year of the Film Production program. He is the Cross Country Running team MVP, qualified to advance to the CCAA Cross Country Running National Championships and is a recipient of the OCAA Men’s Cross Country All-Ontario First Team Honour Award. Shields demonstrated athletic prowess and commitment to college athletics, making him the natural choice for recipient of this award.
Both Athletes of the Year had a surprise as their awards were presented by special guest Haley Irwin, Women’s Hockey Olympic Gold Medalist. Irwin also provided some athletic motivation by speaking about her Olympic experience to all in attendance.

The Thunderhawks Women’s Hockey team MVP Award went to Riley Cronk.
Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s All Academic Awards were presented to Breanne Fron, Jessica Langille, Wynne DeGagne, Mustapha Elkahil, Kyle Cameron, Mathew Zaranek, Hamza Zakari, Brody McIntyre, Heather Kreutz, Carly Angers, Taylor Dewling, Brad Romeo, Hunter Bouchard and Ehren Menard.
Thunder Bay’s Danielle McLean, graduating from BScN, was chosen as this year’s D.A.R. Bradshaw Athletic Achievement Award recipient. This award is presented to a graduating student, who has demonstrated the most improvement in athletics, while exhibiting quality of spirit and competitive drive, and contributing to the overall success of the College Athletic program. McLean is a committed, integral member of the Women’s Indoor Soccer team.
The Dean Ryan Activities Award was presented to Cole Badiuk. Badiuk is the returning SUCCI Director of Athletics. This award is presented to a Confederation College student who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities through involvement in intramural recreation and extramural activities throughout the fall and winter semesters. Badiuk, hails from Balmertown, ON and will be entering the Power Motive program this Fall.
Mihir Rao, from Gujarat, India, was awarded this year’s Intramural Male Person of the Year Award. Rao was the Campus Recreation Team Representative for the Fourtastics. He also introduced the Campus Recreation program to many international students. Donis Tucker, Co-Team Representative of the of this year’s Campus Recreation Overall Champions – Wrecking Crew, was presented with the Intramural Female Person of the Year Award.
SUCCI recognized Tbaytel for its generous corporate sponsorship of Varsity Athletics at Confederation College for the 2013-14 season. Also recognized, was Sportop Marketing for its continued support of Athletics & Recreation at Confederation College.
