THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – This past weekend the TBWHA Bantam Fury hockey team competed in the 2014 Stars Cup in Winnipeg and came home with the Gold Medal Hardware.
After going 3-0 in the round robin winning games against the Dryden Timberwolves, Fort Frances Leafs and the St. Bonifice Stars they finished tied for top spot with the Morden Hawks.
In the gold medal game against the Hawks it was scoreless through the first. In the second the Hawks tallied their only goal at around the halfway point of the period. With six minutes left in the third, the Fury were moving the puck around well in the Hawks end when Ally Johnston let loose a wrist shot that proved unstoppable and tied the game.
Both teams battled hard for the remainder of the period with the Fury netting the Gold Medal goal with only 13 seconds left on a strong shot from just outside the circles by Catherine Kibiuk.
This tournament marks the end of a great season for the Fury as they have won 3 out of 4 tournaments with the other as a silver medal finish. Also a notable and hard fought win in The Stars Cup for the Bronze Medal was Thunder Bays’ Manshield Bantam A Queens.
The Queens went 2-1 in the round robin with their only loss at the hands of the Morden Hawks in a hard fought 4-1 game. Their third place finish also rounds out a successful season with their last stop being the Provincials in Toronto in a few weeks.
