Thunder Bay Police Constable Wins Respect Award
THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police Constable Larry Baxter was honoured this morning with the Respect Award at the Diversity Thunder Bay Breakfast.
Constable Baxter is a part of the Thunder Bay Police Aboriginal Liaison Unit, along with Constable John Walmark.
Liaison Unit officers have a unique role in building bridges with our community.
Constable John Walmark participates in outreach activities aimed at promoting awareness of the ALU to enhance working relationships with the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Constable Larry Baxter is the TBPS Cultural Diversity Officers. He monitors incidents which were committed against a person or property which are motivated in whole or in part by hate/bias or prejudice.
Constable Baxter will also work with community resources to facilitate cultural awareness training for the Thunder Bay Police Service and coordinate and deliver prevention and educational training to the community at large.
The Thunder Bay Police Service faces some challenges in policing within the community’s Aboriginal population. In the past, relationships have been strained.
Through the efforts of the Aboriginal Liaison Unit, and greater education and efforts under Chief of Police JP Lesveque, the work continues toward building bridges.
