The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens put in a strong defensive effort along with some timely offensive production to post a three-game sweep of the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres under-19 prep team over the weekend.

Thunder Bay rode the shutout goaltending of Jayde Turcotte as she posted back-to-back 4-0 shutouts over the Faribault, Minn.-based Sabres Saturday while the Queens bounced back from a one-goal deficit in the third period in rallying late to pull out a 3-1 triumph in the finale Sunday afternoon.

In the opener played at Fort William First Nation Arena the home side got goals from Kaley Tienhaara, Bronwyn Bolduc, Samantha Strassburger and Paige Sullivan to secure the victory.

In the night cap Saturday, Delaney Arena served as the venue in Turcotte’s second blanking of the day against a strong Shattuck-St. Mary’s side.

Tienhaara tallied twice in the win and added an assist while Emily Oleksuk notched the game-winner and doled out a pair of helpers.

Taylor Basaraba had the other Thunder Bay marker on assists by Samantha Isbell and Karli Nummikoski.

Sunday’s match-up at the Fort William Gardens featured a scoreless opening period.

Shattuck-St.Mary’s got on the board early in the middle frame as former Queens’ forward Brooke Boquist connected at 1:37.

It stayed that way until Bolduc tied it with 7:31 remaining in the contest as she finished off the work of Tienhaara and Strassburger .

The trio then combined once again to notch the game-winner with two and half minutes with Strassburger netting the goal.

Basaraba then finished off the comeback with an unassisted effort in the final minute.

Turcotte, who started all three games as the Queens other netminder Sydney Isbell was out with an upper-body injury, was stellar for Thunder Bay allowing only the one goal against in nine periods of work to backstop her side to the sweep of the Sabres.
