WINNIPEG – Thunder Bay Queens Sportop midget AA Queens got a goal in each period and rode the shutout goaltending of Jayde Turcotte to blank the St. Mary’s Academy Flames 3-0 Friday evening in the opening game of a 3-game set in Winnipeg.
Karli Nummikoski notched the eventual game-winner as she buried a feed from Emily Oleksuk with four and half minutes to go in the first period.
Bronwyn Bolduc added some insurance to Thunder Bay in the middle stanza with an unassisted effort while Oleksuk secured the victory with the final marker of the contest in the third.
The two sides will meet again twice more Saturday to wrap-up the series in the Manitoba capital.
They’ll take to ice at 9:45 a.m. before finishing off with a 7:40 p.m. encounter.
After their weekend in Winnipeg the Sportop Queens will return home to gear-up for another tough test as they’ll host the powerful Shattuck St. Mary’s under-19 prep team for a three-game series March 15-16 in Thunder Bay.
Among the notable names on the Shattuck roster are netminder Taylor Crosby, the younger sister of NHL and Canadian Olympic standout Sidney Crosby, along with former Queens’ forward Brooke Boquist.
