THUNDER BAY – Health – Over the holidays, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) provided care to a high level of patients in the Intensive Care Unit or ICU, many of whom required ventilation. This increase in volume impacted many staff and physicians and added pressure to an already busy department. Our team demonstrated excellent leadership and teamwork and, on a minute-by-minute basis, managed the situation effectively and patient care remained the number one priority. Spaces were identified for patients in need, diversions were minimized, and exemplary care was provided.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff, healthcare professionals and volunteers at TBRHSC who worked diligently to deliver quality care to patients and families throughout this difficult and demanding situation.

I am also very proud that the Health Sciences Centre was recognized recently for its innovative design, making sixth place on a list of the world’s 30 most architecturally impressive hospitals and is the only Canadian hospital on the list on http://onlinemastersinpublichealth.com, a resource about careers and education in Public Health. Our state-of-the-art facility contributes to healing and patient outcomes and continues to be instrumental to our progress as an academic health sciences centre, training the next generation of healthcare providers, hosting world-class research and recruiting and retaining top talent.

The start of a new year means it is time to recognize the hard work of employees and volunteers through our Walk the Talk nominations and awards. This annual event recognizes the dedication of TBRHSC volunteers, healthcare professionals and staff who demonstrate their commitment to excellent patient and family centred care, to their team and the organization.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I can tell you that we are constantly moved by stories of the outstanding dedication of the people who work at our Health Sciences Centre.  They inspire us to volunteer to be part of this organization. We are extremely proud of them.  Congratulations to all of the Walk the Talk nominees and award winners.

We are healthy together.

Respectfully,

Susan Fraser, Chair

Board of Directors
