Local Gem…. Fine Dining in Thunder Bay
THUNDER BAY – Food Now – Sometimes when you hear people say a local gem, places that come to mind are small take out places, which hardly anyone knows about but you hear people talk about. This local gem is very well known by locals, but not talked about much, and it has been in Thunder Bay since 1994.
Where do you go when you’re looking for that romantic exquisite place to take a loved one? Well, after dining out at all the restaurants in Thunder Bay in the last two years and writing articles on local gems, one place sticks out, Bistro One.
Sometimes people over look it because they don’t hear the name mentioned that often, as Bistro One is a higher end restaurant producing some succulent dishes.
The atmosphere inside Bistro One is beautiful, the dim lights, the waiters/waitresses are all dressed up very professional, something like you would see on TV.
Each server very knowledgeable and very polite, making sure your dining experience is the best it can be. From the amazing appetizers and main dishes Bistro One has something for everyone. Bistro One has an extensive wine list, many you will only find at Bistro One.
Bistro One has been in Thunder Bay since 1994 opening up on Cumberland St, then later in 2002, moving to its new location at 555 Dunlop Street in the industrial area of town, just up the street from Intercity Mall, with plenty of parking at the rear of the building. Bistro One is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 5 pm til close.
Jean Robillard prides himself on quality dishes such as his appetizer of sea scallops in a maple syrup champagne sauce or the rosemary roasted rack of New Zealand lamb with Gorgonzola butter.
If that sounds a bit too much for you, Bistro One also has a some milder menu options, such as a pan seared parmesan crusted breasts of chicken with a lemon butter sauce and a vegetable risotto or a grilled Angus filet mignon with a grilled cubano pepper puree, roasted potato medallions with a delicious sauce over it. Bistro One is very accommodating as well, if you do not want the risotto, you can change it and have another side dish. Jean is very passionate about cooking and it shows in the quality of dishes he chooses to put on his menu. Bistro One has something for everyone, whether you love seafood, chicken, pork or Angus beef, there is something for everyone.
Bistro One employees a full time pastry chef Maria Costanzo who prepares top notch desserts such as deep fried banana, chocolate and hazelnut spring rolls with a 5 spice ice cream and maple or sauce, or how about the white chocolate and fresh cherry cheesecake with a cherry sauce or my favorite warm chocolate Gâteau with a raspberry coulis and mocha almond ice cream.
No matter what the occasion, or if your simply planning a quiet night out, Bistro One is the place to go. If you have not tried Bistro One, what are you waiting for? They do strive for excellence and trust me when I say, once you have been to Bistro One, you will be back.
Bistro One has made the list of top 200 Restaurants in Canada since 1997, named best hospitality establishment by the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, has won the Eat Smart Award of Excellence by Ontario Healthy Restaurant program and has a triple CAA diamond rating.
