Thunder Bay Women’s Hockey at Fort William First Nation
THUNDER BAY – Randi Marcon’s second goal of the game with eight minutes remaining proved to be the difference as the St. Mary’s Academy Flames of Winnipeg edged the Sportop midget AA Queens 4-3 Saturday in game 1 of a three-game weekend set at Fort William First Nation Arena.
Marcon also began the scoring 1:44 after the opening face-off in what was the lone tally of the first period.
Thunder Bay then pulled even in the second as Bronwyn Bolduc finished off the work of Samantha Strassburger and Montana Russo.
St. Mary’s retook the lead just over a minute later as Marcon fed Danielle Krzyszyk midway through the session only to see Strassburger level the proceedings heading into the final frame.
The two sides then traded power play markers early in the third with Jordyn Zacharias connecting for the Flames and Strassburger countering once again for Thunder Bay.
Special teams played a role in the game-winner as well as Marcon won it with her team up a skater to decide it.
Shots on goal in the tightly-played match-up were 31-31 apiece with Shelby Audet picking up the win and Jayde Turcotte the loss.
The two sides will tangle once more today at 7 p.m. and will then conclude their three-game set Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with both contests going at FWFNA.
