Inaugural AGM for Underwater Exploration Group

THUNDER BAY – News – The Newly Formed Superior Underwater Exploration Society (SUES), a Northwestern Ontario Chapter of the Ontario Underwater Council, will be holding its Inaugural Annual General Meeting at the Waverly Public Library in Thunder Bay at 7:00pm, Wednesday January 8, 2014.

Following the AGM there will be a presentation entitled “Finding Canada #1, The Story of Finding the Wreck of the Mary Ann.”  The Mary Ann was the first ship ever registered in the Dominion of Canada. This past summer the wreck of the Mary Ann was discovered by two local wreck hunters quite by accident and played a big role in the forming of the society. The presentation will include previously unreleased underwater video footage. Everyone is welcome.

The Superior Underwater Exploration society’s mandate is to promote scuba diving in the North of Superior Region through; Safe Diving practices, Tourism Development and the Preservation and enjoyment of shipwrecks and the underwater environment.

“Basically we are exploring history one fin kick at a time” comments Society’s president David Shepherd. Shepherd, along with fellow diver, Rob Valley will be doing the presentation on the Mary Ann.

“This is a really exciting development,” added Mayor Richard Harvey of Nipigon who is Vice President Membership for the society. “We believe there is incredible potential to develop the North of Superior Region as one of Canada’s premier dive destination and SUES will give us the tools and organizational structure to do so.”

The Superior Underwater Exploration Society will be a local chapter of the Ontario Underwater Council, the “de-Facto” Provincial Sports Organization, representing divers in Ontario and shares SUES’s commitment to identifying, protecting, and promoting Ontario’s Underwater Cultural Heritage as well as the rights and privileges of divers.

The AGM and presentation are open to all members of the public.
