Terror Attack in Russia Kills 14 People

MOSCOW – International News – A suicide bomber has killed 18 people in an attack in Russia. The explosion set of at a Volgograd Train Station was set off by a female suicide bomber according to Russia’s anti-terrorism committee. There are also over forty people injured as a result of the attack. Witnesses at the scene say that the bomb exploded as a police officer attempted to search a female in the train station.

It is feared that these attacks which may be linked to Islamic extremists and militant groups in Russia are ramping up heading into the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Doku Umarov, a leader of one of the Islamist insurgency in the Russian Caucasus republics, has called on his supporters to use “maximum force to disrupt the satanic winter Olympics in Sochi”.

Terror Attack Prompts Fears for Sochi Winter Games

No one has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack in Volgograd. However the attack is a demonstration that even with enhanced security, and metal detectors at many of the airports, shopping centres, and railway stations across Russia that a determined terrorist can still maim, kill and inflict terror.

Volgograd is 900km south of the Russian capital of Moscow, and is 700 kilometres north-east of Sochi.

I strongly condemn the terrorist attack on a railway station in Volgograd, Russia, which killed and injured many people. I offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, and wish a speedy recovery to those who were wounded,” states Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO Secretary General. “There can be no justification for such barbarous attacks. NATO and Russia stand together in the fight against terrorism, including by working together on technology to prevent attacks on public transport systems. We will continue to cooperate to improve the safety of our citizens, and the security of our countries”.

Russia has enacted several strong measures designed to overcome terror attacks heading into the Sochi Winter Olympics.

The Kremlin reports that President Putin is being kept abreast of the situation, and the President has offered any needed help, including emergency airlifting for injured victims to Moscow Hospitals.
