SUDBURY – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves men’s basketball team was out-gunned, 91-68 by the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday evening.

The Thunderwolves were able to keep pace for the first 10 minutes, trailing 18-14 after the first quarter. Things would open for the Voyageurs in the 2nd quarter, as their 23-15 advantage in the frame made for a 41-29 score heading into the locker room.
The second half showed no better results for the ‘Wolves whose defense was routinely exploited by a group of seasoned Voyageurs who weren’t going to let their perfect record (now 6-0) be tarnished by the visitors from Thunder Bay.
Lakehead struggled to stay within 10 points as the second half progressed, before eventually capitulating to their North Eastern hosts in the 4th quarter.
Dwayne Harvey led the ‘Wolves with 26 points, with impressive shooting, going 7-of-10 from the field and 12-of-12 from the stripe, along with 6 steals, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Henry Tan was next with 19 points.
Alex Ratte scored a game-high 28 points, as the Voyageurs continued their hot shooting as a team, making over 50% of their attempts from the field (compared to Lakehead’s 41%). Three other Voyageurs scored in double digits, and the team made 27 assists (compared to Lakehead’s 9).
Coach Matt Erdman commented after the game, “Credit to Laurentian for countering every punch we threw at them. They’re a perfect example for us with regards to playing hard, playing together and battling every possession. Our guys put in the right effort tonight but turnovers and offensive rebounds hurt us.”
The men’s team returns to the Thunderdome next weekend to face the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Ryerson Rams.
