THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police are investigating what the service is calling a case of mischief that took place at Lakehead University.
University officials contacted TBPS when they became aware of damage to a teepee ocated on the University grounds.
Police state, “It would appear that a sharp object had been used to cut a number of vertical slits on the backside of the covering of the teepee. It is unknown when this damage was caused to the structure”.
Lakehead University has designated that grounds as a ceremonial lodge site. The area includes a sacred fire, a sweat lodge and it is used by students and members of the community for ceremonies significant in Aboriginal spirituality.
There have been several instances over the past year of vandalism or desecration in the City of Thunder Bay over the past year. Earlier this year the Pow Wow Grounds on Fort William First Nation were the site where an individual in a 4×4 truck drove all over the grounds at Mount McKay, or Thunder Mountain.
In this latest incident Police are asking for assistance from the public in trying to discover the individual, or individuals responsible. Anyone with information on this mischief is asked to call the police at 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 623-8477 or submit a web tip at www.tipsubmit.com.
