Lakehead ThunderwolvesWINNIPEG – Lakehead Sports – The Lakehead University women’s basketball team lost 60-53 to the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday evening in their second game of the BOB FM Shootout, hosted by the University of Winnipeg.

The game was slow to get going, both teams’ offence unable to ignite in the first half, with the ‘Wolves down 10-8 after the first frame. They would rebound in the second quarter to lead 23-19 at the break.
The lids would come off both baskets in the second half, although Brandon did get the better of the ‘Wolves down the stretch, scoring 24 fourth quarter points to seal the victory. Thunderwolf Ayse Kalkan had a great outing, scoring 16 points with 16 rebounds (7 offensive) and 3 assists. Jessica de Haan scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
For the Bobcats, Cassie Cooke scored a game-high 22 points to go with 6 rebounds.
Brandon’s largest advantage came from the free throw line, where they made 19 of 25, compared to Lakehead’s 9 of 11 from the stripe.
Coach Jon Kreiner said, “Tonight was another tough game. We executed a good first half game plan but failed to throw the knockout punch. In the second half we got out-worked and played soft. Ayse defended Cassie well but she got to the FT line late and full credit to Brandon for great ball movement and team play.”
The women’s team will complete their weekend Sunday against the Manitoba Bisons at 11:00am ET.
