THUNDER BAY – Healthbeat – Imagine your loved one is admitted to the hospital and needs to be closely monitored to ensure his heart continues to function properly.  He’s connected to a variety of wires and you can hear the ongoing beep, beep of the machine at his bed. Seems like a pretty normal standard of care, doesn’t it?

[/sws_pullquote_right] For most of us, it’s what we would expect.

But what would happen if that cardiac monitoring equipment wasn’t available? There’d be no way of telling what was going on with a patient. Scary thought isn’t it?

The reality at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is that the entire cardiac monitoring system needs replacement, at an estimated cost of just over $2 million. This includes monitors and stations in areas such as the Emergency Department, the Operating Rooms, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Neurosurgery and the PCI Short Stay Area (where patients recover from Angioplasty). It’s no small sum to replace the equipment, but it’s critical to patient care.

That’s where events like the Balmoral Park Acura Save a Heart Ball make a difference.  Equipment like the cardiac monitoring system is not covered by government funding. Are you surprised? Many people are not aware that funds to replace equipment are made possible through the generous support of donors and event sponsors.

Ryan Witiluk, General Manager, Balmoral Park Acura was thrilled when given the opportunity to support the highly anticipated 8th Annual Save a Heart Ball, taking place on Saturday, October 26. “Our team at Balmoral Park Acura understands how critical our support is to raising money for the Northern Cardiac Fund to make world-class cardiac care possible. We’re extremely thankful for the excellent level of care that we have now and want to ensure this continues in the future.”

This year’s Balmoral Park Acura Save a Heart Ball takes place at the Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Centre. Starting with a champagne symposium at 6 p.m., followed by a gourmet dinner, guests are treated to a gala evening, complete with special late-night snacks. A silent and live auction feature incredible items and Viva returns to get everyone dancing well into the evening.

“The popularity of this event stems from the fact that it’s a very special night out with funds being raised for something that’s close to our hearts, literally,” said Vince Mirabelli, Co-Chair, Organizing Committee. “Our committee works very closely with the event’s sponsors to put together an evening that ‘Wows!’ our guests,” added Sean Davies, Co-Chair, Organizing Committee.  “It’s an event you definitely don’t want to miss!”
