White Water Golf Club Site of 2014 Thunder Bay Golf Classic

THUNDER BAY – White Water Golf Club in Thunder Bay will be the site for PGA Tour Canada for a new event. For the next three years, the Thunder Bay Golf Classic will be hosted here in the city, with some of Canada’s biggest names in golf, along with upcoming heavy hitters and international standouts.

The White Water CLub was host to the announcement of the tournament which will be held in July 2014.

PGA TOUR Canada President Jeff Monday stated, “We are delighted to be coming to Thunder Bay next season as we see it as a perfect fit to host a PGA TOUR Canada event.”

“We look forward to establishing this tournament as a major attraction in the city and developing a strong relationship with the community for next season and beyond.” Fans coming out to this tournament can expect to see an extremely high level of play from some of the best young PGA TOUR prospects from around the world.

The tour came together with input from Scott Sumner from Thunder Bay Business who wanted to do a tournament that honoured his father.

Community members, city officials and local sponsors along with PGA TOUR Canada players Cory Renfrew and Riley Wheeldon gathered at Whitewater Golf Club to announce the details of the event.

“Bringing a PGA TOUR Canada event to Thunder Bay is tremendous news for the Thunder Bay community” said Scott Smith, Executive Director of the Thunder Bay Golf Classic. “Along with the support of our founding partners Marostica Motors and Central Canada Industries, we’re excited about bringing some world class golf to the region and making the Thunder Bay Golf Classic an excellent event.”

“The City of Thunder Bay is honoured to be a part of such a prestigious PGA TOUR Canada event,” said Mayor Keith Hobbs. “I am excited to see these elite athletes in action and welcome the fans who so passionately cheer them on, all while showcasing our City’s sophistication, hospitality and capacity to host a large-scale sporting event.”

PGA TOUR Canada launched its inaugural season in 2013 with nine events taking place across the country. The Thunder Bay Golf Classic is the first addition to the 2014 schedule, taking place July 14-20, the week before the RBC Canadian Open.

The top fire players on the Order of Merit each season earn Web.com Tour cards for the following season, the first step on the path to the PGA TOUR. Mackenzie Hughes, Riley Wheeldon, Mark Hubbard, Hugo Leon and Wil Collin finished in The Five in PGA TOUR Canada’s inaugural season and earned Web.com Tour cards for 2014.

Five founding partners – Marostica Motors, Central Canada Industries Inc., Janzen’s Pharmacy, Keating Insulation, and Smith’s RV Centre – have come on board for the tournament.

“Bringing PGS TOUR Canada to Thunder Bay will be a huge draw to our City and will result in a major boost to our economy”, said Ron Marostica, President and Owner, Marostica Motors. “We are proud that Marostica Motors will be helping to bring a world class event to our City.”

PGA TOUR Canada’s inaugural season wrapped up last week at the TOUR Championship of Canada presented by Freedom 55 Financial. The 2014 PGA TOUR Canada schedule will be announced at a later date.
