THUNDER BAY – Sports – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens are in Hamilton. The Queens are off to the quarter-finals at 9th annual Stoney Creek Sabres Showcase following a dramatic 1-0 triumph over the Sudbury Lady Wolves Saturday evening in a contest that required a shootout to decide a winner.
After going scoreless through three periods and a five-minute overtime session, the match-up went to extra shots.
In the shootout Kaley Tienhaara and Emily Oleksuk both connected for Thunder Bay as did the first two Sudbury skaters.
After netminder Jayde Turcotte thwarted the Lady Wolves third attempt, Bronwyn Bolduc ended it going top corner, glove side to give the Queens the win.
Turcotte finished with 18 saves to record the shutout for her side that fired 17 attempts on the Sudbury net.
With the victory Thunder Bay now moves on to the quarter-final round Sunday as they’ll take on the Whitby Wolves at 9:45 a.m.
The winner of that game will move on to the semifinal at 1:15 p.m. with a berth in the championship game at 4:45 p.m. on the line in that one.
