Two Ottawa area Cyclists Victims in Double Fatality
NIPIGON – Highway 11-17 was closed for several hours on Tuesday. A collision between cyclists and a pickup truck resulted in two cyclists from Ottawa being killed. The collision caused a multi-vehicle crash just west of Nipigon, Ontario. The Ontario Provincial police state that the cyclist, who were from North Glengarry, Ontario were part of a group of 25 riders on a cross-country trip that had begun in Vancouver.
The accident happened in the mid afternoon at 15:10EDT.
The OPP state that the truck which was heading east hit the cyclists just after 3 p.m. near the Red Rock 9 Road. The truck then collided with a truck hauling a trailer, and an oncoming transport truck. The two cyclists died at the scene of the accident. The names of the two deceased are being withheld until the next of kin of the two victims are notified.
There were other injuries as well. Both the persons in the eastbound pick up truck and the driver and passenger in the transport truck were all transported, by ambulance to hospital.
The incident remains under investigation by the OPP.
