The book is based on the true story of Dave Mossman and his experience signing up for an intense and unbelievable high school student exchange that changed him forever.

Synopsis of The Exchange

After deciding to sign up for a student exchange to get closer to the one he secretly admired, high school junior Dave Mossman soon realizes that his decision to travel to Belgium has not only shot him into an educational experience of cultural differences, but an epic adventure of heartbreak, imprisonment, abuse, and self-discovery.

The Exchange is based on the true story of Dave Mossman, at the time a shy and timid teenager from Thunder Bay, Ontario who embarked on a student exchange experience that forever changed his life. Since 2003 the story has been told to hundreds of individuals across the country. A decade later, it now has been written into a novel that will capture the hearts and attention of readers from around the globe, revealing the truth of what really happened on this unbelievable student exchange, and proving that life experiences, no matter how great or devastating, help to develop you into the person you are today.

For weeks Dave was locked in a room and fed only bread and water to eat, loosing over 25 pounds in less than a month. The story is based on the real-life experience and speaks about the exchange experience with his exchange partner visiting in his hometown of Thunder Bay, as well as the intense experience once arriving to Belgium living with a family who deprived him leading to his escape.
